Once upon a time, a customer walked up to a supplier pouring at one of our events and allowed that ‘it must be such fun to be Ann, tasting and planning these with all of you. You are all so knowledgeable and pleasant, too’. The supplier replied, “You know she edits us, right?’
This is true. I do edit who pours at events, based on 3 criteria. 1) Do they have interesting, high quality products? 2) Do they have adequate product knowledge? and-most important-3) Do they have a great personality? Because all the knowledge in the world won’t make up for a grouchy personality, an inability to communicate properly, or someone who can’t get off their phone. To do the job properly, a sales rep needs to engage with the customer, listen, and then tailor his or her comments to the situation. Not every rep can do that, which is why we see dozens of reps and YOU see the same 10 or 12. Those are the one we love.
But who do YOU love? Who do you want to see more of?
As we prepare for some transitions, we’re holding a series of single-supplier tastings. First up-on July 27- is Matt Brooks. We’re calling that the Matt Chat, and are really looking forward to hearing Matt’s industry stories and tasting the wines that he has selected. I am willing to bet there will be one or more Willamette Pinot Noirs, but what else? Loire Valley Cab Franc? White Tempranillo? Other surprises? Yes, yes, and yes. Can’t wait.
On September 14, we’re hosting Corey Bunnewith, the prospective new owner of Pour Richard’s. Corey’s already a familiar face to many; he’s been doing events with us since the early days…2013? But if you don’t already know Corey-or if you do-you should plan to stop by. Corey absolutely excels at both product knowledge and customer service. I know I’m leaving my wonderful customers in very able hands.
But between those events, and slightly beyond, we’ll be inviting other reps to do their own solo shows. Who would you most like to see? Mike Brehart? Brendan? Adam? Hayley of the multi-colored hair and infectious sense of humor? John Avery? Tony? (Actually, I KNOW you want Tony; several customers have already asked). Matt Belanger? Augusto? David Saul? Someone else? No promises, because calendars and availability don’t always match up, but tell us who you’d love to see and we’ll try to make it happen.
Who do you love? Now to find that George Thorogood album…..
